Afaik the best known FFT library, FFTW, run in exactly this manner, with
a big optimization stage between the pattern pre-compute and final schedule.
Smaller FFTs end up totally unrolled, while the big ones consist of a
smaller number of near-optimally scheduled loops.
I believe FFTW also does things like trying multiple alternative

It was a weak post about a weak article with a quote that Intel will deny.
But there are perhaps important points hiding in plain sight here.
As pointed out that GPU on Sandy Bridge was huge for Intel, the size
of three CPUs in 32nm, and the expected performance is down in the

I clicked it, I read it, I thought about it, and now I will give you a
response which you are simply begging for aren't you ? ;) :)
Well here is my response:
"The thruth of the matter could be that intel has missed out on the game
that's called "parallelism"... just as they missed out on the game that

Just a few quick (obvious) comments:
* Multithreading can increase locality of communication (potentially
even more
so than multiple cores sharing L1 DCache).
* Multithreading encourages 'fat' cores that can exploit temporally
- Re: Why does Intel favor thin rectangular CPUs?
It depends on how they're written, of course, but FFTs don't necessarily
care about latency at all: the access/communications pattern might be
total and intricate, but it is entirely deterministic. Back in the 80's
my boss made an FFT engine that the CSIRO (and later SETI) used for radio
astronomy. It used DRAM for all storage, but the compute unit was 100%

Well, I think the average was something like 2.3 bytes per instruction, and
the memory was 4 cycles to access.
For the most part, when you were trying to get a feel for execution time on
- Re: Synthesise latest CPU design in an old library.
Without a proper code cache, instruction fetch will dominate the bus
traffic, so having a 32-bit interface for ifetch would definitely help
since most instructions could be retrieved in a single cycle.
The 8086 model did have a 16-bit bus as well as an 8-byte instruction
buffer, which meant that at least during those instructions that didn't
- Re: Synthesise latest CPU design in an old library.
A 486 is still relevant: Each half of a Pentium is quite similar to a
486 in performance, and both Atom and Larrabee have brought back a lot
of the original Pentium architecture: Simple in-order pipelines, very
low power used for housekeeping issues.
Memory was 4 cycles away, per byte, including both opcode bytes and any

In many instances, it doesn't matter if the calculation is even
seconds later, so long as you don't lengthen the critical path
significantly, because those seconds are small compared to the total
compute time for problems put on really big computers.
- Re: Synthesize latest CPU design in an old library.
I have a sneeking suspicion that if one were to take one of the first
generation RISC machines and implement the circuits in the modern
processes that one would be quite surprised at A: how much you got,
and B: how uncompetitive they would be.
Frequency wise, these older designs would scale quite well in

"Not obvious at the time", or "obviously not needed with the technology
of the time"? That is, if memory is only one cycle away, no one would
want to spend a lot of silicon on a cache because a rational analysis
would say that even if you knew ow to do the cache, it wouldn't buy you
anything.

Every year around Academy Awards time, there will be discussions of
the ironies and artificialities of the awards. Certain kinds of films
and certain kinds of stories are more likely to win for reasons that
have nothing to do with how hard you have to work or how creative you
have to be to make the film.
